For most patients and most consultations, formulating a diagnosis and planning management are the principal aims of the consultation. However, achieving these aims is dependent on the exchange of information and information exchange is dependent on a good working relationship. In section one the methods available and skills needed to meet these four core aims of the consultation are explained. In section two, the application of method to the consultation is described. Starting the consultation, learning and understanding information about the person, the person as a patient, the problem and from the examination, and concluding the consultation are described in separate chapters. The emphasis is on the need for a flexible approach in which the focus and format of the consultation changes in response to the context, the aims, the patient and the information learnt.
